When the Little Theatre of Corpus Christi was incorporated in 1948, one of the organization’s goals was to provide theatre education to the children of the Coastal Bend. Once known as the Junior Theatre, programs included classes and small productions presented by each class at the end of the semester. Buoyed by success and strong community support, programs for young people have expanded dramatically over the past ten years. The awareness and diligence of the Playhouse staff and Board of Directors have resulted in the creation of a variety of opportunities that provide for the cultural education of our youth in a number of different ways. Today, the Harbor Playhouse Young People’s Theatre serves as the umbrella organization for a number of programs that target the children of the Coastal Bend.

FAMILY ENTERTAINMENT SERIES
This series was started to appeal to viewers of all ages. Plays performed focus on family appeal and traditionally mix adult and child actors. For the 2007-2008 Season, our family Entertainment Series will include My Fair Lady, a favorite among audiences, and A Christmas Carol based on the book by Charles Dickens.

PLAYTime (Performing Live Art for Youth)
These school day matinee performances of Family Entertainment Series productions are performed for school children at a greatly reduced ticket price, ($4.00 per student, one adult free for every ten students). This allows the Playhouse to introduce young people, who might not otherwise have the resources, to the magic of theatre while reinforcing literature and audience etiquette skills taught in the classroom.

SCHOOL OF THEATRE
In 1996, the staff and Board of Directors recognized the need for safe, fun and educational opportunities for young people in the arts. Out of that concern, the organization developed the School of Theatre, a program providing reasonably priced classes in all aspects of theatre performance for students in kindergarten through twelfth grade. Studies show that children who study and experience the magic of performance art develop better verbal and nonverbal communication skills, understand and better appreciate diversity, build self esteem, improve problem solving skills and are better equipped to become leaders as adults. They experience inspires creativity in students and improves cognitive and language skills—all necessary skills for young people to succeed in today’s world.
